Capstan Winch

To provide the delegate with the skills & confidence to carry out lifting operations in accordance with LOLER 1998 using a Capstan/Winch.

Description

All operators of Capstan Winches and those involved with the overall operation would benefit from this course.

Theory

  • Identify and understand the current legislation with regard to lifting operations LOLER 1998
  • Understand the theory of construction of lifting rigs

Practical

  • Pre use inspection of Capstan/Winch and lifting equipment
  • Identify suitable anchorages for Capstan/Winch
  • Construct various lifting rigs and carry out pre use inspection
  • Sling various items in preparation for lifting
  • Raise and lower various items, steelwork and dish type aerials
  • Vehicle mount use
  • Know a range of tasks for which the Capstan/Winch is capable including working angles
  • Understand the purpose of the machine components, their functions and controls.
  • Explain the safe working load, its attachments and any ancillary equipment used
  • Demonstrate correct work planning for winching operations including ability to recognize conditions that limit the procedure and use of assistant.
  • Carry out routine pre-use inspection of the Capstan/Winch including the rope accessories and equipment.
  • Carry out routine operator maintenance procedures for the equipment to prescribed standards.
  • Demonstrate effective operation of the Capstan/Winch.
  • Set the Capstan/Winch in a safe mode.
  • Select correct personnel and where they should be standing
  • Operate Capstan/Winch within safe working parameters and to a prescribed standard.
  • Secure the load for work purposes
  • Inspect the equipment after use and prepare for transport or storage.
  • Lifting of antennas and supporting steelwork from both the vehicle mount and structure leg or anchor point

Certification is valid 3 years.

Prerequisites

Valid in date Basic Tower Climbing and Rescue Certification.
